Exploring BTS Pt. 1

Okay y’all, I’m sick. I’m going to try to blog, but if it doesn’t make sense, I blame my cold or whatever sickness I have right now. My brain doesn’t really want to work. Since it was hard for me to find any motivation, I decided to blog about a familiar subject to me: BTS. I absolutely love BTS, so hopefully their music will help me feel better. I’ve been wanting to start an “Exploring *insert artist here*” series for awhile now. Although I already know BTS, I haven’t talked a bunch about their music, and there are still plenty of songs that I’m not familiar with. I’ve made a YouTube playlist of all of their music videos and performance videos that were on official channels, and I’m going to randomly listen to them all. Haha this series may take awhile, but hopefully, I’ll stick with it!

I chose to only listen to songs that have MV’s and official performance videos just because of how many songs there are. It would take forever to listen to every single song. Hopefully, I’ll get to them in the future on my own time. There are many great B-sides out there, but I want to just explore new artists and get a taste of their style. I’ve also included solo tracks but not songs where they’re featured.

Daydream by J-Hope

This just reminds me that I need to listen to J-Hope more. I put some of the songs from his Hope World album on my Spotify playlist, but it’s actually been a pretty long time since I’ve heard any of his solo tracks. Although Hobi isn’t my bias, I feel very connected to him on a musical level because we both want to express ourselves in an upbeat way, but we still want the lyrics to mean something deeper. Since I’m trying to explore BTS, I’ll also try to really understand what each song is trying to say or at least how I interpret it.

The music video itself just seems goofy and fun. I like Hobi’s flow in the beginning of this song. The colors make the song seem happy, but you can definitely feel the bittersweet layer of this song. I couldn’t even imagine what being an idol is like and how much pressure it is. It also always feels weird or awkward when you really want to talk about your hopes and dreams, but there aren’t a ton of people who would understand them. Idol-life can be rewarding in many ways, but it can also be exhausting. The song itself tries to be funky and smooth while conveying this. I like the lyrics a lot, and they’re well-thought out. The style is interesting, but I probably won’t be playing this song on repeat.

Stay Gold

BTS is one of my favorite groups, but there are still some songs that fall short for me. “Stay Gold” is okay, but it’s definitely not my favorite song. I do believe that the meaning is pretty cool though. This song reminds me of when I had to read The Outsiders for my English class, and Ponyboy was told to “stay gold.” Okay, so I just re-watched the whole video, and it was better than I remembered. It’s strange because there’s nothing wrong with it. There’s nothing about this song that I necessarily dislike. However, it still probably won’t be a favorite of mine. We’ll see what the future holds. I love the verses and the build-up to the chorus. The chorus itself is fairly pretty, but I don’t know if I find it extremely catchy either. I think the verses are what will probably be stuck in my head. I’m not sure exactly what is stopping this song from being one of my favorites. Perhaps, it’s the way that this song has a smidge of a love song vibe to it. Hmmm, well either way, if I end up loving this song or finding out what’s stopping me from loving it, I’ll let y’all know.

DNA

All of these songs bring back so many memories, and they also make me miss the old outro😭. I’m not one hundred percent certain, but I believe that this is the first BTS song I’ve ever heard. I didn’t get into BTS right away though. I wasn’t super into BTS until around the “Boy With Luv” era. I don’t even remember how I came across this song, but I’m glad I did. I don’t know why, but in my mind, I always stayed away from watching this MV again. It’s not bad, but there’s just so much going on that it makes my brain hurt. I have a love-hate relationship with all the colors and scene changes. The boys are definitely super stylish in this MV though.

I suppose it makes sense as to why Suga is my bias since this was my experience with BTS. I’ve always been a little bit of a sucker for rappers, and Suga is radiating charm and cuteness in this video. This choreography makes me tired by just watching it though. Jin is also sounding pretty good on this song.

Save Me

Oh my goodness, this song is way better than I gave it credit for! I really love songs with sad vibes but are still upbeat or have the beat pushing it. I swear, they’re also super smooth in this song. There’s not a ton happening, but the impact of the song isn’t any less. I like how they dull the coloring to match the atmosphere of the song. Haha yet here comes in V with his red (I think) hair. This song just really impresses me because it’s pure talent. There’s nothing in this video that distracts from them. I also love Hobi’s part in this. The meaning of this song is interesting because it shows how love can be super powerful and how it can help someone through a dark time. This is interesting to me because I’m sure that this song and BTS as a whole has helped a ton of people through tough times.

Ahhh, I still can’t get over how smooth and raw it is. I think it’s because it’s been awhile since I’ve only been listening to songs like “Butter” and “Dynamite” lately. I love their new stuff, but their old songs can be extremely refreshing. Since not a lot is detracting from them in this video, it also makes me so impressed with their dance skills, especially when it comes to dancing as a group. Even if it’s not perfect, nothing seems wrong. Haha I also love the spin during the chorus. I love RM’s voice on this song because it’s such a delicate song, but his voice is like a rock and keeps us from falling.

Thank you so much for reading my blog! I hope y’all enjoyed and liked the beginning of this new series. I’m excited because there are some songs on my list that I barely know. What are your thoughts on these songs? I kind of want to start a Kpop girl group version, so if y’all have any recommendations of which girl group I should explore first, tell me in the comments below! See y’all in the next post!
